In a world-first, Ryman Healthcare launched Olympics@Ryman; technology-driven retirement games open to all their 12,500 residents across 41 villages across Australasia.
Production took place over three months with an ambitious scope to hold five events — cycling, swimming, bowls, relay and an Olympic-themed quiz.
Run in parallel with Tokyo 2020, Satellite was brought in as the content capture partner to film the games in their entirety.
The production kicked off with a bold event launch TVC which Satellite devised and filmed featuring an inspiring Ryman resident as key talent; also a competitive swimmer in his own right.
We also created a number of case studies filmed in New Zealand and Australia that profiled the evocative stories of Ryman residents who are Olympic champions as well as designing a comprehensive animated titles deck for the games that could be used throughout all the different edits as required.
To cover the initial heats required multiple film crews across Australasia to capture the excitement and energy of the residents taking part in the time trials. This content was edited together into highlights as part of an Opening Ceremony event which we filmed for streaming to all 41 villages.
All five final events required different thinking in terms of how we filmed and edited them. With some being live, most having an AR or virtual component, and all being held in multiple locations demanded some unique problem solving so that the real-time excitement of the events could be conveyed to all the residents watching via stream on a nightly feed. Multiple film crews and smart use of cameras, animation elements with specifically designed sports iconography and bringing on actual sports commentators to do voiceover all added to the authenticity of the moments.
The event concluded with a Closing Medal Ceremony we filmed and streamed live from Auckland’s Hilton Hotel.
